Veloscope Exam for Oral Cancer Screening

Veloscope Oral Cancer ScreeningIn the US every hour, 24 hours a day, someone dies of oral cancer. This year 42,000 people in the US will be diagnosed with oral cancer. The majority of diagnoses are late stage cancer and have a 5 year survival rate of 43%. If caught in an early stage, the survival rate rises to 80%.

The incidence of oral cancer is three times higher than cervical cancer.

There are 2 main causes of oral cancer. The first is tobacco and alcohol use and the second is the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). The HP virus is also the cause of the vast majority of cervical cancers.

The Velscope is a blue light emitting device (not UV light) that allows us to see changes in oral tissues that are not noticeable to the naked eye. We can detect changes in tissue and cells before they become cancerous. Early intervention is the key to a higher success rate. If we can see it sooner, we can initiate treatment sooner.

We now have this new device in the office to further our ability to detect disease early. This Velscope exam should be done once a year.
