Missing Teeth Replacement Toronto

There are 3 options to replace missing teeth:

1) Implants

Dental ImplantsDental Implants are small, screw-shaped threaded cylinders that are placed into the jaw bone. They are used to replace one or more missing teeth, or to stabilize dentures.

Histrionically most implants placed are made of titanium. These have been the standard of the implant world for many years. We now have the option to use a hardened porcelain type of implant made of Zirconium which is more biocompatible. This may be a better choice for those people who are immune compromised and want to remain metal free in their mouth.

The implant acts like the root of a natural tooth, and bone actually forms around a special coating on the implant to hold the implant firmly in place. This process is referred to as osseointegration.

In cases where there are multiple missing teeth, or where the patient has previously had dentures, multiple implants are placed in the mouth to allow for implant-supported dental restorations.

The success rate for dental implants is very high; and, with proper care, good dental hygiene, and a healthy life style, it is rare that implants will fail.

2) Bridges permanently replace a missing tooth or group of teeth.

Missing Teeth Before-AfterA dental bridge is a false tooth, known as a pontic, which is fused between two porcelain/ceramic crowns to fill in the area left by a missing tooth.

Bridges cannot be taken out of the mouth as with removable partial dentures. The teeth on either side of the space are used to anchor or hold the bridge in place.

Most bridges were made of metal with a porcelain layer covering the metal. With newer technologies, we can now fabricate a bridge without metal using a porcelain called Zirconia. This material is more biocompatible and keeps the mouth free of metal.

3) Dentures

Dentures are a removable option to replace missing teeth. They can either replace several missing teeth (partial denture) or even all of your teeth (complete denture).  Often this can be a more economical treatment option.

Dentures are custom made out of either metal or acrylic and are supported by soft tissues in the mouth and remaining teeth if they are present.

Dentures can be used in combination with implants to create beautiful results and maintain a functional set of teeth that look and feel like your own.

Dentures can also be used as a great temporary option to replace a tooth while awaiting the next stage of your treatment plan.  For example you may wish to wear a denture while waiting for an implant to integrate into the bone, or while taking more time to decide on a definitive treatment.
