Bridges & Dental Implants for Missing Teeth

Bridges permanently replace a missing tooth or group of teeth.

Dental Imlpants TorontoA dental bridge is a false tooth, known as a pontic, which is fused between two porcelain/ceramic crowns to fill in the area left by a missing tooth.

Bridges cannot be taken out of the mouth as with removable partial dentures. The teeth on either side of the space are used to anchor or hold the bridge in place.

Most bridges were made of metal with a porcelain layer covering the metal. With newer technologies, we can now fabricate a bridge without metal using a porcelain called  Zirconia. This material is more biocompatible and keeps the mouth free of metal.

Implants

Dental Implants ScarboroughDental Implants are small, screw-shaped threaded cylinders that are placed into the jaw bone. They are used to replace one or more missing teeth, or to stabilize dentures. For many years the implant was made of titanium.  We now have an alternative to titanium which is Zirconia.  This material is a very hard porcelain like substance which may be more biocompatible for many people.

The implant acts like the root of a natural tooth, and bone actually forms around a special coating on the implant to hold the implant firmly in place. This process is referred to as osseointegration.

In cases where there are multiple missing teeth, or where the patient has previously had dentures, multiple implants are placed in the mouth to allow for implant-supported dental restorations.

The success rate for dental implants is very high; and, with proper care, good dental hygiene, and a healthy life style, it is rare that implants will fail.
