What is Biocompatibility?

There’s a good chance you’ve never heard of biocompatibility, but it’s a very important word to the dental industry and it can mean the difference between a severe allergic reaction and a healthy mouth. Biocompatibility is defined as the circumstance of being compatible with living tissue or a living system by being non-toxic, non-damaging and not causing an immunological rejection within the body. In dentistry, biocompatibility relates to certain materials and how they react with you; not just in your mouth, but also in your entire system. Some patients may have compromised immune systems, are sensitive to certain chemicals, or are susceptible to infections; therefore, there are many biocompatible options available in dentistry. What is the CEREC System?

CEREC isn’t a word you probably come across in your everyday life. Even if you’ve had dental work done in the past or will be having work done in the future, CERAC isn’t an acronym you may recognize. Although it may sound like an expensive French wine served only in the finest eating establishments, it’s actually a form of dental restoration! CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics/Ceramic Reconstruction. It was developed in Zurich over 30 years ago in order to create economical, computer-aided design and manufactured, dental restorations. Because of the advanced nature of this process, dentists are able to build, create and implant individual ceramic restorations while the patient is sitting in the dental chair.
